Scandal

The scandal involving Hahn and televangelist Jim Bakker is one of the most notorious incidents in American media history. Hahn was a 21-year-old church secretary working for Bakker’s PTL (Praise The Lord) ministry when the alleged incident occurred. On December 6, 1980, Hahn claims that she was drugged and raped by Bakker and another preacher, John Wesley Fletcher, during a visit to the PTL headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Following the assault, Hahn was reportedly paid $279,000 as a payoff for her silence, a transaction facilitated by Bakker’s associate, Roe Messner. This payment was made from PTL’s funds, which Bakker had control over, raising questions about the financial practices within the ministry.

The scandal came to light in 1987 when Hahn publicly accused Bakker of sexual assault. This revelation coincided with a period of scrutiny for Bakker, who was already facing allegations of financial impropriety within the PTL organisation. Investigative reporting by Charles Shepard of The Charlotte Observer played a crucial role in uncovering the financial mismanagement and the details surrounding Hahn’s allegations. The media’s attention forced Bakker to resign from his leadership roles at PTL and Heritage USA, a Christian theme park he had founded.

In the wake of the scandal, Bakker and his ministry faced immense public backlash, leading to a significant decline in their influence and credibility.

In response to the allegations, Bakker denied the claims of rape, asserting that the encounter with Hahn was consensual. He later described the situation in his 1996 book, I Was Wrong, where he admitted to having sexual relations with Hahn but claimed there was no coercion involved.

Despite his denials, the damage to Bakker’s reputation was substantial. In 1989, he was convicted of fraud and conspiracy related to his ministry’s financial dealings and got a five-year prison sentence. Following the scandal, Hahn became a media figure, frequently appearing on talk shows and in magazines
