Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Azim Palmer, was born on January 7, 1976, in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in Waterford, a neighbourhood in Portmore, located in the parish of St. Catherine. Kartel’s early years were spent in a bustling and vibrant community.
Kartel had a challenging childhood. Despite the difficulties, he was known for his determination and strong will. Growing up in Waterford exposed him to a variety of experiences that shaped his outlook on life. He attended Calabar High School in Kingston. However, he was expelled at the age of 16. After his expulsion, he completed his education through private tutoring.

Vybz Kartel began his music career as a teenager in 1993. He released his first song, “Love Fat Woman”, under the name “Adi Banton”, which was inspired by the famous artist Buju Banton. Initially part of a group called “Vybz Kartel,” he kept the name for himself after the group split. During these early years, he wrote many songs, showcasing his talent and creativity.
Kartel’s big break came in 2003 with a series of hit songs that made him a household name in Jamaica. He became well-known for his catchy lyrics and unique style. His fame skyrocketed after a high-profile clash with Ninjaman at the annual dancehall festival Sting in Portmore. He signed an endorsement deal with the American businessman, Corey Todd, leading to the creation of products like Daggerin Condom and Street Vybz Rum. Despite a temporary fallout in 2011, their collaboration resumed in 2012 – even while Kartel was in prison. Kartel continued to push boundaries with his explicit lyrics, which led to a UK MOBO award nomination being withdrawn in 2004. His 2010 single, “Clarks”, became a significant hit, staying on top reggae charts in North America for 40 weeks. This success boosted his global profile and facilitated the success of the launch of his shoe line, Addi’s, and a line of “cake soap” for skin lightening.
Kartel also starred in a reality TV show, “Teacha’s Pet”, where 20 women competed for his affection. The show was a hit but ended abruptly when Kartel was arrested in September 2011 on murder charges. Despite being in prison, he continued to release music, maintaining his presence in the dancehall scene.
Kartel faced serious legal troubles starting in 2011. He was charged with the murder of a Jamaican businessman, Barrington Burton, and later with the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. On July 31, 2024, Kartel was released from prison after winning an appeal against his 2014 murder conviction. This marked the end of a long legal battle that began in 2011 when he was arrested for the murder of his associate, Clive “Lizard” Williams.
He was charged with the murder of Clive Williams, a case that attracted significant media attention. In March 2014, Kartel and three of his associates—Andre St. John, Shawn Campbell, and Kahira Jones—were found guilty and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
In March 2024, the UK-based Privy Council, Jamaica’s highest court, overturned the convictions due to juror misconduct. During the original trial in 2014, one juror was accused of offering bribes to other jurors to ensure a guilty verdict. This serious misconduct was not properly addressed during the trial, leading the Privy Council to question the fairness of the conviction.
The Privy Council’s decision led to a review by Jamaica’s Court of Appeals, which was tasked with deciding whether a new trial should be held. On July 31, 2024, a three-judge panel announced that a retrial was not needed. Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop stated: “We conclude that the interests of justice do not require a new trial.”
This ruling meant that Kartel and his associates were free to go.
Kartel’s release sparked celebrations among his fans. Outside the courthouse in Kingston, his attorney, Isat Buchanan, was surrounded by jubilant supporters. Many fans had believed in Kartel’s innocence throughout the years and saw his release as a victory for justice.
